U = Unions. The first “personal union” where a king/queen of England ruled over was Sveyn Forkbeard who ruled England, Denmark and Norway from 1013-14 (as did Cnut at little later). Many other unions occurred such as England and France (Henry IV), England and Ireland (Henry VIII) and in 1603 King James VI of Scotland became James I of England. England was politically unified with Scotland in 1707 under Queen Anne to become Great Britain, which in 1801 also unified with Ireland. X = Xenophobia – Many English/British monarchs have faced xenophobia among their subjects due to their foreign blood. Daniel Defoe (author of Robinson Crusoe – arguably the first English Novel) defending king William (who was Dutch) ridiculed the idea of “English Purity” in his poem “The True Born Englishman” in his preface to the poem in 1703 he stated that the target of the poem was not Englishness as such but English Xenophobia.
