Drywall is not a very stiff product, it tends to flex a bit with any movement of your house. This would lead to cracking of grout and tiles that were placed on it. I would definitely suggest that this is one of those situations where doing it right the first time is cheaper and easier than doing it right the second time. As with any ceramic tile installation you should have it done by a very experienced person. Ceramic tile is one of those products that can look terrible if it is done even slightly wrong. Any lack of care or skill in the installation is immediately apparent when you look at the finished product. Even on floors where there is already a plywood subfloor, they have to install a much thicker and more rigid subfloor to ensure that the tiles and grout don’t crack from movement of the house.
