sunscreen may not prevent it, but it may slow it down walk in the shade as often as possible an umbrella helps hats keeping your hands in your pockets (lol) also not wearing dark colors cause dark colors attract the suns radiant energy causing you to burn quicker

sunscreen will prevent tanning if you take one that has a good protection (go for at least 40 FPS). Anything that blocks out UVs will do the job. If you plan on being out in the sun for a whole day, apply a good amount of FPS 60 or more at least 30 minutes before going out and also re-apply whenever you go bathing or sweat a lot, or at least every 5 hours.
