Is there any truth to the possibility that Richard Powells grandfather built the Bell house?
I read that tidbit somewhere; unfortunately, I believe the source was Brent Monahan’s fictional account. The idea that Richard’s grandfather built the Bell home comes from a speculative folk tale that probably dates back before the turn of the century. The idea goes like this: Professor Richard Powell was a very intelligent fellow who wanted to join the upper crust of society in Robertson County (which he finally did in reality). His grandfather was also very intelligent and built a home near the Red River that contained secret passages and voids in the walls that a man could easily slip through or hide in. Once John Bell had purchased the property, the Bells either went into a pact with the Powells in presenting the haunting to the public, or Richard Powell, Jr. perpetrated a scheme to use what he knew about the house to fake the haunting, thus ending the engagement between Betsy and his rival for her affections, Joshua Gardner.
