Is there any treatment for animals that become infected with WN virus?
The main treatment is supportive therapy to reduce the severity of symptoms. If your animal shows any symptoms that may be associated with WN virus infection, contact your veterinarian. In the United States, a vaccine, which has been shown to be safe, has been conditionally licenced by the USDA-APHIS Center for Veterinary Biologics to help prevent or reduce WNV infection in horses. The killed virus product has a reasonable expectation of efficacy in preventing illness caused by WNV. Under USDA regulations, such a product may be licensed while data to establish efficacy and potency are still being obtained. In Canada, the Veterinary Biologics Section of Animal Health and Production Division has issued an import permit for this WNV vaccine. Canadian veterinarians can import it for their restricted use, or more simply, order it through the Canadian Importer (Ayerst Veterinary Laboratories). They must be aware that the product is conditionally licensed in the USA as noted above. Veterinari
