Is there any reason why todays reptiles shouldn one day evolve back into dinosaurs?
Im Alec Nov 23rd, 2006 Firstly, today’s reptiles are not descended from dinosaurs. The reptiles and dinosaurs split before the great days of the dinosaurs, and reptiles lived alongside dinosaurs throughout their existence. The modern descendants of (some) dinosaurs are birds. Evolutionary theory says you can never go backwards. To do so, you would have to reverse an incredible number of random changes in roughly the same order as they were made. It would be like throwing a die 10,000 times, then stopping and throwing it another 10,000 times *and getting the same numbers in reverse order*. Another reason is that the evolutionary niches that dinosaurs occupied are no longer available. Any reptile or bird that began to evolve towards the niches of dinosaurs would probably find itself being preyed on by todays much more dangerous beasts.
