The demand for finished fabrics and processed yarn from the importing countries is meagre owing to the old and moderate processing technology in our country. The exporters, therefore, send out only grey fabrics/yarns which are subsequently processed by the importers. The impact of this kind of supply adversely affects the price in the absence of value addition and results in lower earnings. We will upgrade this sector to take care of both the quality of products and life of the people. To encourage modernisation of the processing industry, the import of a large number of textile processing machinery has been allowed under concessional customs duty of 5 per cent. The import of certain specified textile machinery items has been exempted from countervailing duty. Such indigenous machinery items have been given excise exemption.
