Is there any proof of a high rate of suicide for Transgender people?
The Transgender suicide rate has been estimated at between 31% to 50%. This is difficult to prove since medical examiners are not told of transgender status due to family embarrasment. This site has an online transgender suicide prevention service and our records indicate that our high suicide rate is in fact real. In a crisis survey here 50% of transsexuals have had at least one suicide attempt by their 20th birthday with one as young as age 7. Many have had multiple attempts. As of April 3rd, 2009 staff here have handled 78,800 suicide crisis’s with 11,629 being actual attempts in 5 years of operation. 46,933 were suicide ideation and 20,238 were suicide ideation with a plan. To us this is proof positive that the Transgender suicide crisis is very real and that the estimates are too low. We are the only site to deal with actual transgender suicide. This is based on interaction with over 9 million visitors.
