Name and address withheld There’s nothing special about seagull droppings, other than quantity when compared to sparrows or the house martins that have a fondness for my cars. The bulk can be washed off quite easily but it can leave a permanent mark on the paint. It’s only “modern” paints that suffer from this – black Audis in particular apparently. Old cellulose based paints were more resistant, and the really old enamel paints laughed in the face of avian bombardment. You may wonder why manufacturers changed the paint, but it’s because the older paints gave off lots of fumes. Car factories are under pressure to reduce toxic emissions from the buildings and so emission free, water based paints are now compulsory in many countries. They are unquestionably better for the environment but vulnerability to excremental etching is a definite downside.
