It is usually better to do the Federal return first, but CA is a stand alone state. As far as filing NR, could you possibly provide a little information on your status? Depending on where you are or what you are doing, there may be more that you can do. I take it you are not in the US. Depending on where you work, you may be able to form the 2555EZ for the foreign income exclusion. If you are military, then there are other pluses. You will need to enter your SSN, filing status, and anticipated refund amount. However if the 2555 or any other situation applies to you, then you still have the chance to file an amendment, and get your extra dough.
