Is there any particular training needed to become an appraiser?
This is a learn-as-you-go industry. You need to see it, touch it; experience is the best teacher. To get accredited there were seven intense days of three courses, which involved ethics, report writing and what other expectations there are as an appraiser. How busy are you on a weekly basis? I split my time at the auction house and doing appraisals. It seems to be feast or famine with the appraisal side. One week 10 or 12 appraisals and the next none. That means working anywhere from 60-70 hours to cutting back and having a lot more time for research. Do you ever watch the “Antiques Roadshow”? I like it for information gathering purposes but not for pricing. What they have to say is much more interesting than the value of an item. They have specialists in the area who are a wealth of knowledge sometimes. But you never know if they are giving you the fair market value or the replacement value of an item, so there is a lot of inconsistency. How have shows like this affected you in your p
