Answer Dear Jay The group of drugs called the statins of which you mention two do cause muscle problems in isolated instances. This demands changing the drug to another on as the consequences of prolonged use in these cases can be severe. There are a few other drugs that can benefit as well as dietary and lifestyle changes that can be used. The drug of first choice after the statins is one called cholestyramine or the related drug colestipol. These drugs only have constipation as a major adverse effect and can cause othrer drugs taken concurrently not to work as well. Otherwise they are safe but unpleasant, by some, to take as one has to drink fair amounts of the dug as a suspension. This can be offset my flavouring the slurry with fruit juices.
