According to Para. 5.1.6 of DoD Instruction 1338.18, Armed Forces Clothing Monetary Allowance Procedures, articles of outer clothing issued by the government can be altered at government expense at the time of sale or issue. Members must bear the cost of further alterations, unless a change in physical profile occurs during initial basic or follow-on training. Further, replacement is authorized for changes in physical profile during the first 6 months of service if the cost of alterations would exceed that of replacement and the servicemember’s commanding officer certifies the replacement issue is more economical than alterations. Issues are to be made from stocks of serviceable used clothing, when possible. Instructions state that member will receive another clothing allowance if at least three years have passed since the need for a maternity uniform was issued and a new requirement exists.
