Is there any green dishwasher detergent that actually works?
A. I hear you: It’s a challenge to find automatic dishwasher detergent that works and is eco-healthy. Few people know that dishwashers actually contribute to the indoor air problems in everyone’s homes; gases are emitted from the bottom of the unit during the washing and drying cycles. Another reason to use only nontoxic and safe varieties of detergent. Personally, I prefer Seventh Generation, which makes both liquid and powder dishwasher detergents that are just as effective as their traditional counterparts. When you are purchasing a nontoxic variety, look for a product that is: • phosphate-free • chlorine-free and ammonia-free • free of dyes • free of NTA and EDTA • safe for septic and gray-water systems Also check the label to see if they are plant-based or made in the traditional manner—from petrochemicals. You’ll pay a bit more of a premium for a high-quality green product, so experiment with using less.
