Is there any evidence that North America was inhabited prior to the arrival of the Indians?
The Bering Strait crossing may have been the route for one wave of immigration, but it is far more probable that immigrants came across the ocean from China and Japan – the Aleutian chain would provide an easy route – or that they came up from South America, as the early Polynesians did incredible journies with sailing canoes.
First off, you’re misinformed on a number of things. Many archaeologists and anthropologists believe Amerinds crossed the Bering land bridge from Asia 9,000-12,000 years ago but it’s not necessarily a majority opinion anymore in those scientific disciplines. Many scientists lean toward much earlier dates, up to 40,000 years ago. Also there is considerable speculation about different migrations from various parts of Asia and from Pacific islands, possibly by boat. Diverse American Indian cultures have different oral traditions. Some have stories of ancient ancestors who once lived in the frozen north. Others have stories of people crossing the ocean in boats. Many believe they’ve always been in the Americas. None of these Native accounts can be disproven and for all we know may all be true. It has even been suggested by some that the migration was in the opposite direction, that peoples from the Americas traveled to Asia in prehistoric times.
