Is There Any Difference in the Risk of Stroke in People with Chronic Atrial Fibrillation as Compared with People with Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation?
Recent data suggest that patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF) and chronic AF have a similar risk of stroke. Furthermore, a third of patients with paroxysmal AF develop chronic AF over 2-3 years. The risk is similar in men and in women. Paroxysmal AF may be associated with the sick sinus syndrome and patients with this condition are at particular risk of stroke and thromboembolism.
