Is there any cure for osteoporosis?
Approaches to dealing with osteoporosis: 1. Take 1,000-1,200 mg calcium in supplements and/or food daily with at least 500-600 mg. magnesium and 1,000-5,000 I.U. of vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol). You may notice this is considerably higher than the current common 400 I.U. for D. It turns out almost half of us are D deficient and the RDA is, as is often the case, inadequate. Cal and Mag are bone components and D is essential for assimilating them. Many conservative M.D.s are recommending 1,000 I.U. and many progressive ones recommend 5,000 I.U. The best approach is to have your levels of D checked now and again after a month or two of taking D. 2. Do weight-bearing exercise. That is, walking, squatting and/or lunging with weights, and upper body strengthening. Stressing the muscles puts a concomitant stress on the bones and if adequate nutrition is present (see 1 above), the bones will strengthen just as the muscles do. 3. Try Alendronate or one of the other prescription bone-builders. 4.
