“Clinical Research” covers a broad spectrum of activities. Clinical trials entail a senior investigator, usually an MD or MD/PhD and a team whose size is determined by the scale of the research. There are nurses who will draw blood, schedule the patients, perhaps collect data; frequently a graduate student, and often a research associate who has earned a PhD. Occasionally there are post-doctoral students – students who have a PhD but are continuing work in a sub-specialty prior to becoming independent researchers. But clinical research also entails basic research; at the molecular and biochemical level, usually working with animal models. These people have PhD’s in a relevant field. In all types of clinical research there is usually a designated “Clinical Research Associate” who might be responsible for the collection and analysis of data and for contributing to Journal submissions.
