They have started using some form of corn by-product to make biodegradable plastics, but it’s such a small scale right now, it barely makes a difference. If your really worried about the amount of plastic going into landfills, start reducing your consumption at home. Use re-usable biodegradable cloth shopping bags. Keep them in your car at all times to use on shopping trips, and one foldable one in your purse for impulse purchases. Buy a big pack of ziplock bags, start taking them with you to the store for putting produce/bulk bin items in rather than taking the one-time-use bags the store provides. All ziplock and sandwich bags are totally washable, rinse them out, turn them inside out, let the inside dry, turn them right side out, let the outside dry and reuse. Throw them out only if they develop a hole or become too nasty/thin to reasonably be able to reuse. They’ll last about a year or a 100 washes.
