Fossils are generally dated by the strata they are in, not by radiocarbon dating as mentioned in the discussion section. Only things with carbon in them can be dated via radiocarbon dating; most fossils are either imprint fossils or the actual thing itself totally mineralized, thus leaving no carbon. The strata themselves are dated one of two ways: either through another radiometric dating method, if that is applicable to that strata, or by its position in the geologic column. Radiometric dating involving either carbon or argon is very chancy. However whole, perfect zircon crystals do yield very consistent and reliable results. With all of the methods together, the strata can usually be dated pretty reliably on atomic time.
