Is there an index of need for health services created using census data?
The BC Linked Health Database (BCLHD) provides income quintiles-deciles as a proxy of socioeconomic status and thus need for health services. BC Stats produces Socio-Economic Indices for BC local health areas and regional districts. The Overall Regional Socio-Economic Index is a compilation of indices of crime, health, economic hardship, education, and children and youth at risk. BC Stats also produces Socio-Economic Profiles for BC local health areas, health service delivery areas, health authorities, regional districts and school districts. Both use a combination of census data and other data sources. The Human Early Learning Partnership at UBC uses a measure of socioeconomic risk called the Social Index, which was developed by the Offord Centre at McMaster University using census data. See HELP’s Mapping Portal FAQ for more information. The Manitoba Centre for Health Policy (MCHP) developed the Socioeconomic Factor Index using census data.
