Is there an FM transmitter for the ipod that does not sound like crap?
Think about this for a second. Commercial FM radio stations have a unit called a “stereo generator” which creates the FM stereo baseband signal from the air chain audio. It costs at least $10,000, fills a couple of spaces in a 19″ equipment rack, and contains some fairly complicated electronics. The FM signal it generates, while meeting certain technical requirements, still sounds like crap. Now take that and scale it down into something that fits into an Altoids box and costs $40. Will it sound better? 🙂 The chief limitation of FM radios is that by design, they are incapable of reproducing audio frequencies above 17.5 KHz. Even frequencies below that are subject to aliasing, distortion, and incredible amounts of noise. Even a cassette adapter is a better choice than FM, but most cars don’t have cassette decks anymore. If you must go FM, stay away from the “iTrip” products by Griffin. For some reason, these are the lowest-powered, most distorted-sounding devices I’ve ever used. My fir
