Is there an equivalent acid sulfate soil problem anywhere else in the world?
Research undertaken by CSIRO Land and Water has shown that the Coorong, Lower Lakes and Murray Mouth region is being seriously affected by low water levels exposing wetlands, riverbanks and parts of the Lower Lakes. Based on water levels at the end of March 2009, CSIRO has estimated over 20,000 ha of acid sulfate soils in Lake Alexandrina and Lake Albert are acidifying as they progressively become exposed to the air because of falling water levels. The acidification in the Lower Lakes is happening at a scale that is unprecedented anywhere in Australia, and possibly the world.
