It’s only in our recent history as a species that vegetarianism has become an option. Not too long ago, say, in the past couple hundred years, cutting meat out of your average diet would be a death sentence. Especially in the days before refrigeration and canned food, the only things that would last through the winter would be grains, a few select types of vegetation, and cured meats. Don’t underestimate, too, how much of the world lives in poverty and needs every last food source they can get their hands on. As an overweight American, it’s easy to say that vegetarian options are easily available. Tell that to an African. Again, no meat = death sentence. Besides that, they’re delicious, which makes them high in demand. Steps are taken to make sure the animal feels no pain at death, and I’ve been told (though I can’t find a source to verify it) that if a cow is afraid, it will release a chemical into its muscles that will sour the meat, rendering it inedible.
