Yes there is. Aternative OS are ubuntu OS, Firefox OS, Sailfish OS, MiUi, Tizen and Cyanogen.

The main alternative is Windows 10 Mobile which is used by all Microsoft handphones (previously Nokia Lumia series)

But stick to the iOS and Android because main major apps support are built for these 2 devices.
