Is there an alsa plugin I can use to compress or normalize my audio output volume?
As a matter of fact you can! You can use LADSPA to “compress” the audio (some people call it normalize), kind of like how the radio stations do it. This pretty much raises all sound to the same level. Handy for, when example, you can’t play music too loud and don’t want to miss the softer sounds. It’s different from applications like mp3gain because this method dynamically alters the output sound rather than limiting music / audio by its analyzed content.
