Western Michigan University complies with federal, state, and local laws including those that regulate the possession, use, and sale of alcoholic beverages and controlled substances. The Department of Public Safety staff actively enforce laws concerning drug and alcohol use which includes: (a) Distribution, use or possession of any illegal drug or controlled substance; (b) possession and/or consumption of alcohol by individuals under 21 years of age; c) illegal possession or consumption of an alcohol on campus property; and (d) driving under the influence of alcohol or a control substance. In addition to criminal prosecution, the Student Code details drug and alcohol offenses and discipline for student, ranging from an official reprimand to expulsion from the University.
