Just so you know, this has been a problem for as long as the U.S. has been a land of immigrants. The census started thinking about it in the early 1900s, and a couple of smart cookies developed something called the “soundex algorithm” that applied numbers to various sounds, so no matter how the name was spelled, people could look it up.
