Is there a web site that gives transcripts of census records free of charge?
Yes – this one! All you have to do is scan the original census image and upload it to a photo-sharing website such as photobucket. Then provide a link to the image in Additional Details via the Edit button on the action bar under your question. We will then put our heads together and decipher the census entry for you. Provide enough of the census image to give us something to work with so that we can compare the word(s) in question with other words and characters on the page. It is too difficult to guess what an isolated word out of context might be. You could see what the indexes on Ancestry, etc, make of it, but if it is difficult to read they probably won’t have transcribed it correctly anyway. Transcribing the census is laborious work and the transcribers won’t have spent much time trying to decipher entries that are hard to read. The indexes are full of mistranscribed entries, some of them quite hilarious.
