Is there a way to prevent kidney stones?
Kidney stones are typically caused by certain factors that increase the concentration of calcium and other substances such as oxalate or phosphates to start forming stones. Treatment and prevention of these stones can be done through behavior changes and medications. One important factor to help prevent stones is to increase the amount of fluids that you drink, preferably water. Other treatments include decreasing the amount of sodium in your diet, as well as watching how much calcium is in your diet. If you have a history of kidney stones your doctor may obtain a 24-hour urine study. This measures factors that may promote stone formation and look for substances that may inhibit stone formations.
