In today’s society, health is of vital importance. The human body is a great machine capable of miraculous tasks if properly cared for. With the increase of pollution, environmental toxins, workload, stress, unrefined and processed foods to name a few, the body has far more stressors then those of our ancestors. Each body has vital systems and organs that have a job or task it must complete in order to survive. When combining the negative factors that work against optimal health, the odds of obtaining illness and disease are overwhelming thus the need for a whole body tonic. A whole body tonic along with proper nutrition, rest and exercise will aid the body’s own defenses and boost it’s own miraculous capabilities to withstand the tests of time.

A whole body tonic can be a simple method used to strengthen and aid each individual organ. The focus of one herb to each organ will ensure that the entire body will benefit in its endeavor to combat system stressors. In this whole body tonic, we will be constructing an internal herbal blend called an infusion in an herbal tea form using the herbs chaparral, ginseng, gotu kola, alfalfa, kelp, dandelion root, pleurisy root and cayenne with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice and a cinnamon stick. The infusion would consist of one teaspoon of dried herb or two teaspoons of fresh herbs in equal parts to one cup of boiling water. Ideally, the herbs should be whole, cut into small pieces.  Infuse the herbs in the water for ten minutes and then strain. You can drink this warm or chill for a refreshing cup of herbal iced tea. This tea can be used up to three times per day. A tea once made, is good if used within a twenty-four hour period. I would advise to disregard any unused portion after the twenty-four hour mark.

The eight herbs plus the cinnamon and lemon have a multitude of properties that will aid the entire body in successful function. Chaparral is an herb that acts as an antioxidant. Chaparral may help deter bacteria and viral occurrence in the mouth while decreasing the incidence of dental cavities. Chaparral can also reduce inflammation, inhibit mold, bacteria and pathogens from escalating within the body as well as help heal skin and bones from damage caused by foreign pathogens. Ginseng is an herb that acts as a stimulant. Ginseng relaxes the nervous system and encourages the secretion of hormones, improves stamina, lowers blood sugar as well as cholesterol levels and increases resistance to disease. Ginseng is reported to possess hormone-like and cholesterol-lowering effects, promote vasodilatation, provide resistance to infection, have excellent antioxidant and anti-fatigue effects as well as reducing the effects of aging and enhance physical, sexual and mental performance. Guto kola properties are said to be blood purifying as well as diuretic and tonic. Guto kola can improve circulation in veins as well as capillaries, enhance blood flow, increase the strength of the connective tissue that surrounds the veins, and can help to maintain the elasticity of the veins. Alfalfa is an herb that contains many needed nutrients for optimal health. Alfalfa is equipped with digestive enzymes, trace minerals, potassium, iron, phosphorus, magnesium, calcium, chlorophyll and vitamins A, B-6, D, E and K. Alfalfa is a superior aid in detoxification, reducing blood cholesterol levels and plaque formation on the arterial walls. Alfalfa can also help to speed elimination, reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke and help prevent bone loss. Kelp in an efficient blood tonic, it can stop major pollutants from being absorbed back into the body and activates the immune system. Dandelion root is a diuretic and a laxative. It also stimulates liver function, improves digestion and reduces swelling and inflammation. Dandelion root helps when gall bladder and urinary disorders, jaundice, cirrhosis of the liver, dyspepsia and constipation are present. Pleurisy root is a respiratory expectorant. It can help in almost any respiratory ailment while clearing and strengthening the lungs. Cayenne is used as an herbal booster that promotes the properties of the other herbs in the formula. Cayenne is an efficient expectorant used to break up mucous. Cayenne also stimulates circulation and nutritional support, which increases the exchange capacity rate of carbon dioxide to oxygen in the lungs and increases perspiration to allow toxins to expel from the body faster. . Lemonwill add a bit of flavor and aroma as well as a detoxifying benefit. A squeeze of fresh lemon juice has natural anti-inflammatory and diuretic properties. Lemon also attributes positive effects to blood circulation. Lastly, adding a fresh cinnamon stick to the blend will stimulate circulation, help to control high blood pressure, bleeding and indigestion. Cinnamon is commonly known for its carminative, antispasmodic and antimicrobial properties.

There are a few potential side effects when taking this herbal tonic. Cayenne can cause an irritation to the stomach if used in large quantities. If you do not use cayenne regularly it would be advised to start of with a very small amount. Alfalfa should not be used if you have an autoimmune disorder, or are taking any blood thinner or anticoagulant. Young children, people suffering from depression, high blood pressure, anxiety or any acute inflammatory disease, should not use ginseng. This tonic should not be taken while pregnant.

This herbal tea is a quick, efficient way to boost the overall health and efficiency of the bodies’ vital organs and systems. The outside stressors that we encounter every day can be dealt with and guarded against naturally. A great reason for the use of this tea is that it does not take a lot of time, tastes good and has so many positive contributions.  This tea is a worthwhile contribution to ones own performance. When it comes to the tests of time nature’s herbs are available to help us succeed in our goal of optimal health.
