Is there a trend toward funding biomedical products vs. clinical research?
A (Dr. Tabak): What occurs is that clinician scientists tend not to put in their first amended application at the same rate as do non-clinician scientists. When the clinician scientist does put in the amended application, there seems to be no difference in their success relative to non-clinician scientists. If there are intrinsic roadblocks in our current application review process, we would be very interested in understanding what those are. Q: There is a need to capture clinical data from larger practices and networked practices, but there is no infrastructure to do this. Can we brainstorm how to gather these data? A (Dr. Zerhouni): This is not a review program problem but a systemic program problem that relates to the huge increase in clinical service demands, the way academic health centers have evolved, and the increasing regulatory burden on clinician scientists. All of this relates to the fact that there is not a significant home in which to train young scientists to become effe
