Is there a term in bridge called “revolving lavinthal discarding?
Answer Hi, Lavinthal discards assigns a suit preference meaning to the first discard on any hand. Using normal Lavinthal discards, a low discard would call for the lower ranking of the other 2 suits and a high discard would ask for the higher ranking. Therefore if declarer is running diamonds, in order to ask for a heart you would discard either a low club (asks for the lower of hearts or spades) or a high spade (asks for the higher of clubs or hearts). In revolving Lavinthal, the suits are considered to be in a circle with spades below clubs so that each suit has a suit below it and also a suit above it (S-C-D-H-S-C). Here, a low discard would call for the suit immediately below the suit in which the discard is made and a high discard would call for the suit immediately above (ignore the suit declarer is playing). Here, if declarer were running diamonds, in order to ask for a heart you would discard a low spade or a high club.
