Is there a such thing as fungi resistant shingles?
Shingle manufactures have been making mold and fungus ‘resistant’ shingles. These shingles are carefully constructed by baking a thin layer of copper sulfate on the outside of the shingle granular. When rain contacts the copper sulfate, positively charged copper ions are released into the water buildup on the shingles. Copper Ions kill fungus growth spores, but eventually this Copper Sulfate coating will wear out over time with contact to the elements. These fungus resistant shingles will eventually develop algae and/or fungus growth.
