Is there a such thing as a Regional AMBER Alert, and if so… what is the difference?
Regional AMBER Alert programs are in place for each grand division of the state. Regional AMBER Alerts are activated when it is believed that the abductor has stayed in the local area. TBI is the activating agency for the Middle Region, Knoxville Police Department is the activating agency for the Eastern Region and the Memphis Police Department is the activating agency for the Western Region. TBI is only involved in East and West Regional AMBER Alerts when assistance is requested by the departments responsible for activating those plans. Only media in the counties surrounding the AMBER Alert will receive information through the National Weather Service and only the TDOT intelligent signs for that area will be activated. The Lottery Terminals are not available for Regional activation due to the way the terminals are programmed. A Regional AMBER Alert can be elevated to a Statewide AMBER Alert if information is developed that the abductor has traveled out of that region.
