[A] Patch Cables are offered in many colors from a variety of companies, the most popular colors being white, gray, blue, red, and black. These colors do have any specific assigned purpose. It is not as if all crossover cables will be red, for example. Many installers will choose specific colors for their patch cables and crossover cables in order to help them mark certain equipment or location assignments of the cable. for example, if all of your computers in a specific area are connected using blue patch cables, and you are required to set up a “temporary” station for someone, you might select a different color from the others to help you identify it quickly among all the other cables.. In some cases, like military applications, a Standard Operation Procedure may exist for Information Technology installation requiring that certain cable colors are used to indicate what type of equipment is attached to it, or what type of location the cable is being run to.
