Yes, there are several solar-powered portable air conditioners on the market. Solar air conditioning may sound strange – using the hot sun to cool your home – but it also makes a lot of sense. The sun is at its hottest and most “energetic” during midday, when air conditioning is most in demand. Unfortunately, solar air conditioning can be prohibitively expensive, but,as prices for solar components continue to fall, expect products like the following examples to become increasingly affordable. Rotartica has developed perhaps the most portable of existing solar air conditioning units. It combines evacuated tube solar thermal collectors with a water-heated absorption chiller. Greencore Air also has a portable unit on the market. This one runs off a 170-watt solar panel and a battery bank. It can keep a 600-square foot room cool and can be plugged into the grid for charging if necessary. McDonald’s and the US Navy are both testing Greencore Air’s portable solar AC units.
