Is there a serious prospect of a UK population of 70 million?
Yes. The latest 2008 based population projections from the Office for National Statistics show that our population will reach 70 million in 2029. Nearly 70% of this increase will be a result of immigration – see http://www.statistics.gov.uk/pdfdir/pprojnr1009.pdf The government claim that this simply will not happen but there are substantial reasons to believe that it will (Briefing paper 9.25) This latest projection is based on the assumption that immigration will continue at 180,000 a year. In 2008 net immigration was 163,000 compared to 237,000 in 2007. The fall was at least partly due to the onset of recession.
