Is there a security risk in installing TopTools?

No. Concerning the DMI Agent, all operations performed using extended DMI such as rebooting a PC require DMI passwords. DMI passwords are the BIOS passwords that you may also set using the HP Setup program every time you start your PC. There are two levels of passwords: Administrator and User. In general, Administrator capabilities are required to perform security-related operations, whether locally or remotely. Thus, we recommend that the passwords be set to non-blank values. Another aspect is that under Windows NT, NT administrator capabilities are required to install the TopTools Agent. This is also true of the TopTools Device Manager, which runs on Windows NT. On Windows 2000 and WMI, the login capabilities control what can be done using WMI. For more information about security, please refer to the white papers on TopTools security available from the documentation page on the HP TopTools web site.
