Is there a proper method to destroy fire rings?
On a typical weekend, volunteers might tear down 3-5 rings on a trail – there have been many times I’ve torn down a dozen in a weekend. There are good ways and better ways to tear them down, the only real “bad” way is if the coals are still hot. To tear one apart you really should have a sturdy pack shovel (not the plastic trowel that barely qualified for burying human waste). And make sure the coals are dead cold. Chuck the blackened rocks to the 4 winds-try putting the blackened portion face down so others don’t think they’ve found a spot to build a fire. Toss them in the bushes (smaller ones) or roll them away if they are too big to lift – no sense finding finding someone laying beside a fire ring because they pulled their back out tearing it down. Keep making sure the coals are dead cold as you dig through pulling the rocks out.
