There are several processes in commercial operation to obtain potable (drinking) water from seawater: Reverse osmosis Distillation Electro dialysis Ion exchange filtration None are very cheap compared to collecting rainfall. Sunlight is a good source of energy for distillation – but is limited by daylightt and cloud cover. The other processes require replaceable chemicals or electricity. Another problem is distribution. Small islands are ideal for these types of systems but medium or large ones much less so as the consumers can be a long distance from the source of supply. Why don’t richer/resource-rich countries help out? From an altruistic/humanitarian point of view you could argue that they should, but in the real world of economics/politics, its usually – “you get what you pay for”.
