Is there a probationary period for apprentices and trainees?
There are set probation periods for commencing and recommencing apprentices and trainees. It usually lasts 90 calendar days for an apprentice and 30 calendar days for a trainee. There are a number of exceptions to this rule. Specific details on the probationary period are available under the individual apprenticeship or traineeship in the Queensland Training Information Service (QTIS). This gives you and your apprentice or trainee time to work together and decide whether to continue with the apprenticeship or traineeship. During this time you should assess your apprentice’s or trainee’s work ethic, reliability and potential to succeed in the chosen apprenticeship or traineeship. Probationary periods can be shortened or lengthened on application within the original probationary period, by you or the apprentice or trainee. An application seeking to amend the probationary period must be received before the probationary period expires. To learn more, read Probationary periods information s
