Is There a Net Gain in Energy When Making Ethanol from Biomass?
The table below is derived from Tables 11.1 & 11.5 in Twidell & Weir ยป [3] The table shows how much energy it takes to make ethanol from sugarcane, timber or straw and compares it with the energy in the ethanol produced (30MJ / kg). The data suggest that the crops ‘waste’ material should be used to provide fuel for the conversion process in order to produce a significant energy surplus.
