Current work on development of a national eHealth architecture is progressing in pragmatic stages led by NEHTA and, at present, is focused on implementing the components discussed above in order to enable secure information interchange and basic interoperability between existing health information systems for certain key use cases – notably discharge/referral, communization of laboratory and diagnostic results within the secure messaging environment and medication management. Since the time of HealthConnect, policy makers have been reluctant to commit to the significant investment needed to develop, implement and derive the potential benefits of shared EHR services; however the matter remains under review with a significant investment expected sometime in the next 12 months.
