Is there a naming certificate for Jewish baby girls? Answer: A baby boy receives his name at the brit milah (bris), and generally the mohel who performs the ritual circumcision provides a certificate of naming with the date of the brit milah, the name of the mohel, perhaps the name of rabbi who has been invited to participate, and of course the baby’s name. In the Conservative Movement, naming certificates, available through the book service of the United Synagogue, are provided for a baby girl’s naming. I assume that the other movements, often known as “streams” of Judaism, especially in North America, would also provide naming certificates for girls that the congregation prepares and gives to the parents. It is a valuable document that can provide proof in the future that the child is Jewish.
