The Roman gods evolved with Roman society, as new members of the pantheon were added from new areas of the Empire – and similarity between certain gods would cause their names to amalgimate in that area. However, there was never an overall term for believing in the Romans gods (unlike being a Hindu). What would happen is, yes, a Roman would associate with one god (towards the end of the Empire, many soldiers were in the cult of Mithradetes) – but they would still believe in the existance of the other gods. People from Rome, Greece, Babylon or Egypt had many gods, but did not see themselves as belonging to any particular “religion” unless they associated themselves with, say, the cult of Isis from Egypt. The “ancient” religions had no problem with people worshipping whatever they liked – they had no problems with Judaism, or Christianity, for example.
