Well the hormones that you have whilst breastfeeding are said to delay ovulation and this stops you getting pregnant. It is certainly not a method that I would rely on though. I have a 7 1/2 month old and still don’t have my period because I am breastfeeding but you don’t know you have ovulated until 2 weeks later when you get your period, so just because you don’t have a period yet doesn’t mean you are not ovulating. I know many people who have fallen pregnant whilst breastfeeding. For it to be effective you have to be feeding around the clock every 4 hours and if you are lucky enough to have your baby sleeping through the night you are not feeding around the clock.
