Is there a market for battery-powered, hydrogen-fueled automobiles?

Imagine an automobile that uses battery power to electrolyze water to produce hydrogen and oxygen. The hydroben and oxygen is then used to run a conventional internal combustion engine. The only exhaust from the engine is steam. This scheme is environmentally friendly and can use existing engine technology. However, it is probably less energy efficient than an electric car that uses batteries and an electric motor.
