Is there a legal limit on how long a president can serve, or is it merely customary?

Actually, most of the people here are wrong. The legal limit is 1 day shy of 10 years, not 8. A President may serve up to 2 years of a previous President’s term and get elected to 2 terms on his own. Of the “recent” Vice-Presidents who assumed the Presidency after the death or resignation of their predecessors, LBJ was allowed to get elected to 2 terms on his own, while Ford could only get elected to 1 more term on his own, as LBJ had served less than 2 years of JFK’s term, while Ford had served more than 2 years of Nixon’s second term.
