You can actually paint on velvet, you know! You could could attach the velvet to your canvas and just paint away! Just buy a piece of velvet slightly larger than you canvas and wrap and staple it behind. The velvet paintings are usually cardboard backed with a very fine velvet look to them–very little nap. Velvet you buy by the yard is usually much higher quality than the velvet painting kind. I would use a stiff brush and very little paint; using the dark velvet as the shading color. I think you are looking for a velvety surface that you can paint with regular paint, right?
